Schools and Home Values in Westchester County

When finding the perfect home for you, sometimes you need to look at things that have nothing to do with your current situation. There are numerous examples of this, but one of the most often cited are schools.

Let's say that you are looking at two homes basically equal value. You love both of them, and you don't have kids in school, so you don't really concern yourself with the schools that serve these homes.

While it is not the biggest of factors in determining the value of a home, often proximity to a school, or as is more often the case, school districts themselves can be something that parents are specifically looking for in a home.

Take a look at a recent example of homes in Pasco County, Florida. In this case, the local school district changed the attendance zones for a couple of middle schools and a high school, and also announced plans for additional zoning changes due to overcrowding.

These changes have resulted in upset parents who bought homes planning (to some degree) on the assurance that their kids would attend one particular school and now those plans have been changed. In some cases, it is likely that property values may be affected.

So how should you go about knowing which schools are served by a home you are considering buying? We have pages on this site that allow you to search for homes by many of the local high schools. It is important to remember that homes can be added to the Multiple Listing Service incorrectly by other REALTORS, and we will have no way to see it. In addition, many districts make the school assignments based on a lottery system.  The BEST way is to discuss your needs with me and let me help you find a home that meets your needs. I am happy to discuss your wish list with you before you buy so that you can get the BEST home for you.
